Tim's Notes

The coffee from Nano Challa has a very distinct and recognisable flavour that most likely comes from the local heirloom cultivars that the members grow. Although the coffee is a mix of coffee cherries from many smallholder farmers, you can clearly see that the beans have a very uniform shape and size as compared to coffees from other cooperatives such as one of our other favourites, Hunkute. Not only does this make it easier to roast the coffee but it is also easy to extract and therefore will give you a very sweet cup of coffee. When you prepare this as espresso, please make sure you cool down the espresso a bit before drinking it. The floral and citric flavours are much more pronounced and balanced by the sweetness in the coffee once the temperature is slightly cooler.

Cherries are hand picked by the smallholder farmers that are members of the cooperative. After harvest the coffee cherries are hand sorted to get rid of underripe and overripe cherries before the cherries are delivered for processing. A Penagos Eco Pulper is used to remove the skin, pulp and mucilage from the parchment coffee. Afterwards the parchment is soaked in clean water for about 8 hours. The parchment coffee gets skin dried and sorted under shade for about 6 hours after soaking before it is dried in the sun for about 10 days on drying beds.

Nano Challa is a relatively new cooperative, established in 2010. They are located in an Agaro, an area that is starting to get known for intense and clean coffees with unique flavours. Most of the coffees are grown above 2000 meters above sea level at smallholder farms averaging at about 0,5 hectares in size. The farmers grow a lot of different traditional cultivars in addition to an improved native cultivar called "1274." Most of the coffees in Ethiopia and in this area are produced organically by tradition, but the farmers and cooperative are not certified for organic production and sales.

The Nano Challa cooperative was formed with assistance from Technoserve. A non profit organization founded by the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation. Technoserve has been assisting with training of the management, organizing the cooperative and also finding markets for its coffees. All cooperative members are qualified for a second payment, which means they get paid a small payment when they deliver their coffee cherries to the cooperative. The second payment is calculated and paid once the coffee is sold. This has so far contributed to a significant increase in payment for the local coffee farmers.
